October 2008

Company has once again left and I find I have time on my hands to do some things I would like to do. Jeanne Shaffer has asked me to ride along with her through the Rhine Valley and I said yes. We began with a ferry to Holland then Jeanne drove us through Germany ending in Salzburg. Along the way we toured castles, saw beautiful scenery, ate fabulous food and stayed in an awesome bed and breakfast.
Ferry

The ride on the ferry was very calm, we could not even tell we were moving. Jeanne's cabin smelled like gas so they assigned her another one on a different floor. Since mine had plenty of room and an extra bed we stayed together in my cabin. Having gotten to the port early we were allowed to go ahead and board so it ended up we were the first on and first off. Lucky us.

Holland

No time to stop in Holland but I found the landscape interesting. You could see streams and green houses everwhere including in the middle of neighborhoods along the interstate. The windmill was wonderful as it seemed to have a house attached to the middle of it and cars underneath as if someone lived in it. Next is the sign indicating we were entering Germany.
Germany

Above is the Cat and the Mouse castles. It is said that these rival families were always at war with each other. The middle picture is the bed and breakfast we stayed at. Breakfast consisted of meats, jam, bread rolls and a soft boiled egg with tea. Once we were close to the Neuschwanstein Castle we entered a tourist area with resturants and shopping. Above is a cute building that I couldn't resist taking a picture of.

Above is a view from the footbridge looking down at a waterfall several hundred feet below. In the middle is a view of the castle from the footbridge and on the left a close up view as we hiked closer. Once inside there were 300 stairs to the top of the Neuschwanstein Castle and we climbed them all.

Scenery on the drive down the Rhine Valley.

Dachau Concentration Camp

I had never been to a concentration camp before so this was a very solemn experience. To think I was walking on ground that has been walked on by the many many jews that were kept here was a bit overwhelming. It was sad to see other visitors holding each other as they must have been remembering a family member. One lady was praying which was a very touching moment.

Jeanne and I stopped at a wonderful German restuarant and I definately wanted something German. I couldn't pronounce what I ordered but translated it was "Mouth Bags". It was a noodle similar to ravioli with sausage, herbs and spices inside served in a white sauce. Delicious.
Salzburg

Jeanne and I arrived in Salzburg in the evening. It was an amazing city in the dark so I would love to see it during the day. We drove around looking for a place to eat before heading to our bed and breakfast. It took awhile to find somewhere as there was a festival in town and all of the resturants were full. Finally a waitress worked us in and I enjoyed a venison stew and traditional apple struedel.

The above picture is of the Fountain that the children sang around in the Sound of Music. There was a huge mountain behind it with a castle/lodge/conference facility on top. At night Jeanne and I did not see how to get up there in the dark. My plane departed at 10 a.m. the next day so I will have to explore this on another visit.
